This is the Case type 1 O.S.S./OSS Smachet. This is the earliest version (type 1) with the mirror finished bright blade and the V 44 type black handle. Reference, Coles 3, page 156, #1 or Silvey Boyd, page 128 #133. Blade imperfections in photos are reflections from background. There are minor scratches from scabbard snaps and rivets. The blade has been very lightly sharpened with no blade loss or grinding marks. Cannot say mint but very close. The guard is parkerized with no flaws, rust or discolorization. The grip has a leather piece expertly sewn on and appears to have been there since issued. The scabbard is in excellent shape, completely intact, sewn with 13 staples around the edges and a light bit of veragris around the rivets holding the keeper and belt strap. Name stamped at the bottom of back of scabbard is W.S. Tyler Jr.. Overall collector quality example original WW II Smatchet.
